Open GNSS SDR Book

The Book “A Software-Defined GPS and Galileo Receiver: A Single-Frequency Approach”

This section is under development. Over time I will also gradually transfer the information from our old GNSS SDR homepage to this homepage.

We and our readers over time have found some mistakes in the book and the Matlab code which we have collected in a separate webpage with fixes.

More information about this book can be found at the publisher page.

The Book And a GNSS USB RF Front-end

The diagram below shows the hardware-software partitioning in a GNSS SDR. The software (Matlab code) comes on a DVD that is included with the book. The GNSS USB RF front-end can be bought separately. For more details please visit the page about GNSS RF front-ends. As alternative the DVD contains a few records of live GPS and Galileo signals. Galileo signals were in test mode when the record was made.

There exists also a Chinese version of this book (ISBN: 978-7-118-06014-0).

  1. Hi, we’re currently running the GNSS simulation – great work, thanks! Just one issue though …. it’s working fine for me on Matlab 2012b, but one of my colleagues is having various issues on Matlab 2014a – are you aware of any compatibility issues of this sort? Thanks
    Nick

  2. I’ve now answered my own question – the Matlab command ‘intersect’ has to run with the additional argument ‘legacy’ in order to preserve its functionality in Matlab 2012b and prior versions. All working now!

    1. Hi Nick,

Thank you for your comments. Right now I do not work so much with Matlab, so I did not had a chance to detect this issue. I am not surprised that the code will need some changes to support new versions of Matlab. The code was written about 7-8 year ago! Thank you for sharing your fix!

      Best regards,
      Darius

  3. Hello, I’ve recently got the ebook version from Springer Link. However, this version doesn’t come with the DVD with the Matlab code. Is there any way I can get the files in that DVD?

    1. Dear Rodrigo,

The software receiver book is available in two versions:

      • as an ordinary printed book. This version comes with a DVD that
contains the Matlab code, sample data, and other stuff. There is no
alternative way of getting the Matlab code.
      • as an e-book. You only get the text.

We are unsatisfied with such outcome, but unfortunately at the moment due to several factors we do not have the possibility to change this situation.

  4. I understand the situation, but I am studying GPS and Matlab implementations currently and I would like to know if it would be possible for you to send by email or any other way the Simulink code of the PRN simulator.

    Kind regards

    1. Dear Rodrigo,

I am a bit confused what exactly you are looking for so I will give two answers.
First – if you are talking about GPS signal simulator – that code is not included in the DVD and it is not for publishing. The second answer – if you are specifically looking for the PRN generator code – then the answer is that this code is not complicated and there are a lot of such generator code examples on the Internet (even at the MATLAB Central File Exchange). All versions are similar as the algorithm is simple.

  5. Hi, can you plz tell from where can the simulink model of GPS signal simulator be downloaded? Does it come in DVD with the paper version of the book?

    1. The signal simulator is not included in the DVD and it is not available for download.

  6. Hello

I have a question for the collection of data. Could I use the passive antenna and the SiGe version 1 front end to collect data? Because I can collect data use the active antenna. Thanks a lot. I really appreciated for your help.

    Best Regards

    1. Hello Edward,

It depends. I expect that the hardware should work without problems. But the signal to noise ratio will be bad, so the standard GPS signal acquisition and tracking algorithms most likely will not be able to detect and track the GPS signals. Most likely you will need to use some higher sensitivity algorithms that use longer coherent and/or non-coherent integration periods.

      Best regards,
      Darius

  7. Hello
I have a question about the SiGe GN3S sampler Version 1. I know it is built around SiGe SE4110L GPS Front End ASIC.

I read the datasheet. However I am wondering what kind of the oscillator is used in the front end since the SE4110L has a built-in oscillator and also support external TCXO. So I do not know the hardware structure of the front end around the SE4110L.

Does the hardware of the GN3S sampler version 1 is open-source? If it is OK, Could I get the hardware design about the front end not the SE4110 datasheet.

    Thanks a lot!

    1. Dear Edward,

These questions you should address to the designer of the front-end Dennis Akos.
I might be wrong, but it could be that the SiGe SE4110L is no longer in production.

  8. I am able to run your Matlab code for SDR of GPS using recorded IF signal after ADC (64 Kb).
I am getting the result of Acquisition and tracking units. I want to test the entire Matlab code.
I will be needing IF signal after ADC (2GB) .May I request you to kindly send the IF signal after ADC (2GB).
    Thanking you

    1. Hi,

Due to file size at the moment I cannot place such big files for download on this site.

  9. Hello,

Is there also a MATLAB code for GPS software receiver which handles complex Baseband signal as input in the DVD of this book?
